Last week was a very interesting week.

The numbers of fake news was so high that it became a moot point to argue or disprove them. Funnier still that when you try to correct them, they responded saying they will try to confirm it with someone else.

LMS - Surprising US Noise

The news that Malaysia is buying naval ships to be designated as LMS from China has resulted in a surprisingly big reaction, of all countries, the United States. 

Seeing this news clipping where DS Hishammuddin gave his piece of mind almost caused me to fall of my chair laughing.

Why is the LMS required?

Yesterday, DAP MP for Kampar, Dr. Ko Chung Sen questioned the need for Malaysia to purchase 10 Littoral Mission Ships worth RM3 billion from China, as reported by MalaysiaKini.

The good doctor claimed that Najib administration does not care for the welfare of the rakyat as the purchases were made when the budget for Health Ministry was cut by 24%.  The good doctor claimed that the purchase of the 10 ships is not beneficial.

F16 Joke

Once in a while, I would indulge in a satirical post.  The most recent recent was the post on the F16. 

It was purposely written in a serious language to be as if it is true.  Surprisingly, despite the obviously fake F16 and clues like politaik (roughly translated to as shitty politician), some friends taking care of other pages were asked if this post is true.

Sad thinking that the joke had more than two thousand hits, but serious articles get only a few hundred hits.

But even sadder that many did not critically use their thinking cap and deduce the article as a fake.

Defence Procurement Policy - Diplomacy

This will be the last article of this series that discuss on procurement policy.  As I had covered the topic rather extensively in the previous articles, this article will be shorter.

One of the least discussed functions of defence procurement is as a diplomatic tool.  Often, war is quoted as the extension of diplomacy.  But it is very seldom discussed that defence procurement itself is used as diplomatic tool.

The United States is apparently the pioneer in establishing their defence industry as part of their diplomatic tool.  With their technological prowess, their equipment are sought by many countries.

Under the thinly veiled moral high ground of human rights, the US used these procurements to seek to control the regimes of their buyers.

Happy Merdeka Sarawak

Come tomorrow, Sarawak celebrates her 53rd independence day from British Colonial rule on 22nd July 1963.  And tomorrow's celebration is the first to be held on the momentous day since 1963.

Personally, the celebration has brought a flood of ambivalent feeling to myself. 

As a Malaysian, the date has no historical meaning attached to it.  The date was never recognised by Sarawak government since formation of Malaysia.  And the Education Ministry did not include it in History syllabus.

Defence Procurement Policy - Local Defence Industry

In my most recent article on defence procurement policy (published 6 May 2016), I have touched lightly on local defence industry. This is not due to dearth of information on local defence industry. Contrary, the industry today is very much alive and would probably be a key economic driver for Malaysia in 3 years time. Sound optimistic? Yes, and I'm still trying to be conservative in my outlook.

Ten years ago, you can basically count with your fingers the number of key players in the defence industry. Today, this number has grown.

Many of these companies came to promote their products during the recent DSA. Though in terms of floor space taken up shows a slight decline in number of exhibitors, the quality of local display has increased significantly.

Previously, local players were only involved as middlemen peddling products from big international players. This time, local players had also brought in homegrown products which received rather good review. Some of these were rather sophisticated. At least 1 product had received offer for international joint-venture and marketing from a very well-established international firm.

Young Men Die Fighting Old Men's War

There is a saying, young men die fighting old men's war. That saying can never be so true.

The recent release of 4 Sarawakian sailors by kidnap-for-ransom group (recent events and info points to possibly a different KFR group and not Abu Sayyaf Group which I will elaborate further) has reignited calls for Malaysian government to send armed combat troops into Southern Mindanao to destroy Abu Sayyaf Group.  Read it here.

This also coincide with Armed Forces of Philippines deployment of 5,000 ground troops to deal with the Abu Sayyaf, which is conservatively estimated at most 500 men.

Daish - A Step Closer to Defeat

Yesterday (17 June 2016), Daish had did an unexpected turn-about. They had retreated from Fallujah. Fallujah, the ground where Daish predecessor, Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, under the leadership of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had manipulated and fomented hatred between the Sunni and Shiah to explode. Fallujah where many US soldiers fell (an American friend's brother was amongst those killed there).

The Price for Peace

On 1st April 2016, a distress call was received from a Malaysian tugboat in the waters off Ligitan islands. Of the crew of 9 men, 4 men, all Malaysians from Sibu, Sarawak were taken hostage by the group believed likely to be Abu Sayyaf.

Emergency response were swift.  But the kidnappers had left Malaysian waters. The first responders were baffled.  Why choose an unguarded route when the Sandakan - Tawi-Tawi route is well protected?  (The area they were taken was near to the border meeting point between Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Local Defence Industry

The recently concluded DSA or Defence Services Asia 2016 held several pleasant surprises to me.  I had originally planned not to attend.  But a window of opportunity opened and I decided to drop by.

Noted several noteworthy improvements made by the local defence industry which I must say have far surpassed what I thought it would be 3 years ago.  Back then, the only key players were Deftech, BNS and SMEO.  Today, we have a a few other noteworthy new players; Global Komited, Destini Berhad, Aegis Malinnov, just to name a few. And interestingly, some of these companies are self-funded.  Some even garnered interest from foreign countries and at least 1 locally developed system had been approached by a foreign conglomerate for joint-venture.

Defence Asset Procurement Policy - Non-Traditional Threat - Part 3

In the previous article, we have discussed about the threat that is posed by our neighbouring countries.  These traditional threats (called so as these are threats potentially posed by one country to another) unfortunately are not politically correct, thus seldom gain traction within our sociopolitical discussion sphere.

This article on the other hand will touch on non-traditional threats.  This is actually a bit of misnomer as non-traditional threat is a common threat faced by all nations.  If handled incorrectly, non-traditional threats can easily overwhelm a country and bring chaos to a country.

In the first 50 years of Malaysia's existence, she was threatened by communist insurgency.  Led by the political bogeyman Ong Boon Hua or better known as Chin Peng, the word communism became synonymous with treachery and evil to most Malaysians, especially amongst rural Malaysians.

On 5th August 1975, this changed when Japanese Red Army stormed the AIA Building located in the middle of Kuala Lumpur.  More than 50 individuals were taken hostage. Thankfully, the incident was resolved without loss of lives.

Military procurement doctrine is largely driven by threats that a country is facing.  Malaysia does not run far from this.  As mentioned in the first instalment of this article, the invasion threat and the Domino Effect theory had convinced our defence planners back then to convince then Prime Minister Tun Hussein Onn (father to the current Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein).

In fact, understanding the threat that Malaysia is facing today should be the driving reason in formulating a defence assets procurement policy to ensure that our defence forces stay current and is able to counter potential threats.

Defence Asset Procurement Policy - A Need

The last major large scale defence asset procurement made under a single programme was under the PERISTA (Program Pembangunan Rancangan Istimewa ATM) which began in the late 70's which trickled through the 1980's.

The programme which saw Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) underwent a large scale modernization programme which changed it's face from a counter-insurgency centric defence force into a largely capable semi-conventional armed forces.

Procurement Shift in the Pipeline?

It has been about a week since I last updated this blog.  Despite last week being a week with loads of updates, especially from the defence world, I just didn't have the time to write anything.  Work life balance had gone down the drain last week and I probably need a week or two to recover.  With Mr. Note 4 (yes, I ended up buying a Note 4 and those notes joke in the past were not just mere jokes) suffering some catastrophic damage, I had to send it in for repairs, depriving me of my favourite platform to update my blog.

RMAF CN235 Crash

Yesterday (26 Feb 2016), an RMAF CN235 light transport aircraft had crashed landed in the waters off Kuala Selangor.  All pilots and crew-members survived, but an unfortunate rescuer had passed away, believed to be due to heart condition.  Condolence to the family of the rescuer, Encik Abu Hassan Abdul Latif, 57 who had passed away.

Just bought this book last week. Written by Leon Comber (Prof), he attempts to write the book from an academician's eyes.

Questions of Identity by Bob Cook

Finally, after years of searching, across 5 countries, I have finally gotten a copy of this magnificent boom by Bob Cook. Even more interesting was this book might be one of the earliest edition as it was published in 1985 or 1987. The difficulty in searching for this book stemmed from the fact the book was no longer printed and very few people like books from UK (as opposed to same type of thriller from the US).

Tun Abdul Razak - The Hidden Story

First, you tried to damage his reputation, then his wife, then his father, then his children, and when that all failed, you're targeting his father again. When you tried to damage the rest, I don't care. That's not my problem but his. But when you tried to damage his father's, I care.

Yes, I'm talking about our PM, DS Najib Tun Razak. I don't care if you all spread lies about him or his family, because they have yet to prove themselves in my eyes. But when you try to spread half-truths about Tun Abdul Razak, that I can't accept.

Operasi Menyelamat

Dalam AO, pasukan penyelamat sudah jumpa package Lima Kilo, seorang HVT yang perlu diselamatkan keluar daripada ancaman musuh.

Lalu CO pasukan penyelamat menggunakan radio membuat panggilan kepada CSAR team untuk extraction.

CO : Package Lima Kilo has been secured. Request immediate evac at LZ Charlie. Advise area is hot, Over.
Base : Copy, over. Package Lima Kilo has been secured. Evac at LZ Charlie. Area Hot. Bird on the way. Over.

Kat base, arahan bagi CSAR dikeluarkan.

Selang 30 min selepas, helikopter CSAR terbang ke LZ Charlie.

CO : WOOI!!! Orang mintak helikopter extraction lah!!!! Bukan peket beras 5kg!

GST Model - Clearing Up the Confusion

Last night I had happened so on a question posed by a acquaintance on the GST model. 

Going through the scenario he posted, I found out the lack of understanding of the model, which in turn is likely to have led to people being misled about price increase and grudgingly accepting it and blaming the govt at the same time.

Reminiscent of an Untold Journey

A few months back, I had a family outing with my parents and my youngest brother to Krabi, Thailand. It was a simple trip, but meaningful.

The whole trip was meaningful as I don't spend much time with my parents. What more my youngest brother who is now studying overseas.

Of all the activities we had together, I feel this one was the most meaningful; the island hopping trip.

Termeterainya perjanjian damai pada 17 Oktober 1990 antara Kerajaan Sarawak (mewakili Kerajaan Persekutuan) dengan Parti Komunis Kalimantan Utara (PKKU) membawa kepada tamatnya pemberontakan bersenjata oleh elemen komunis di bumi Malaysia.  Telah tewas bukan satu, bukan dua, tetapi 5 parti komunis yang cuba membawa ajaran anti-Tuhan itu ke bumi Malaysia.
